RADFORD, Va. – Adrienne Vesely and Manon Delsol won their respective singles flights, but it was not enough for the #3 Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs as the #6 Radford Highlanders won the Big South Conference quarterfinal matchup, 4-2
Gardner-Webb dropped the doubles point with Delsol and Valentine Limauge falling at No. 2, 6-1, and Miljana Ristic and Daniela Naupari losing in the top flight, 7-5.
The Hiighlanders extended their lead to 2-0 when singles play began as Tyler Blalock won in two sets at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0.
Vesley got the 'Dogs on the board with a dominant win in the No. 5 flight, her team-best 13th of the season. She defeated Radford's Jeanine Acierto, 6-2, 6-0 to make it a 2-1 match in favor of the Highlanders.
Gardner-Webb tied the match when Delsol won in three sets in the No. 6 position. The Moncault, France native won the opening set of the match, 6-4, before falling in the second set. In set three, Delsol broke a 4-4 tie by winning two consecutive games to take the match.
With the match tied at two, Radford clinched the victory and advanced to the semifinals with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 position.Â
In the top flight, Ristic won her first set, 6-3, but the Highlanders' Anastasia Belyaeva fought back to take the match with wins in sets two and three. Belyaeva won the second set, 7-5 and earned a 6-4 victory in set three.
At No. 3, Limauge dropped a tough opening set, 6-1, to Malin Falk, but forced a winner-take-all third set with a 6-4 triumph in set two. In the third and final set, Limauge jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Falk would fight back. With the score knotted at five, Falk won two straight games to give Radford the 4-2 win.
Gardner-Webb concludes the 2019 season with a 10-9 overall record, while Radford improves to 13-8 overall and advances to tomorrow's semifinals. The Highlanders will battle seventh-seeded UNC Asheville. UNCA upset #2 Presbyterian in the quarterfinals, 4-2.
