Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Gardner-Webb Falls to Radford, 4-2, in Big South Semifinals

RADFORD, Va. – Gardner-Webb won the doubles point and Maximilian Scholl ended his senior year with a victory at No. 1 singles but the 'Dogs lost on courts through six as the Radford Highlanders were victorious, 4-2.

Due to rain in Radford, Virginia and surrounding areas, the tournament was moved indoors to Virginia Tech's Burrowls-Burleson Indoor Tennis Center in Blacksburg.

Gardner-Webb concludes its season with a 13-8 overall mark, and Scholl, a Stuttgart, Germany native, led the team with 18 wins in the No. 1 singles flight. Earlier this week, he entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's singles rankings at No. 124.

The Runnin' Bulldogs got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point. In the No. 3 position, Breno Plentz and Stefano Puga held Radford's Andres Silva and Matko Vargo scoreless, and the 'Dogs clinched the point with a win at No. 1.

In the top flight, Scholl and Millen Hurrion bested Rodrigo Magalhaes and Yevhen Sirous, 6-2.

Gardner-Webb held the early lead, but a strong showing by Radford in singles play gave the Highlanders the win and the first spot in tomorrow's Big South championship match.

"Obviously it's disappointing that our team season is complete," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Radford deserves a lot of credit for rebounding after we jumped on them in doubles. That doubles point was pivotal to the match, and I knew we needed it, along with a point on courts four through six. Hopefully we can get a player in the NCAA singles championships as we have two that are very deserving."

In singles play, Radford erased the deficit and took a 3-1 lead after the first three matches. At No. 6, the Highlanders' Silva tied the match with a two-set win, and Alexandros Caldwell put RU in front with a win in the No. 3 position.

Po Lassalle gave the Highlanders a two-match advantage with his victory on court three, but Scholl made it a one-match contest up with a victory at No. 1. The country's 124th-ranked singles player handled Radofrd's Sirous with a win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Gardner-Webb trailed, 3-2, and needed wins on court two where  Hurrion fought Magalhaes and court four where Ross Gilbert took on Michiel Meekers, to advance to the Big South championship.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to end the match in their favor with when RU's Meekers won at No. 4. The 4-2 victory meant the first spot in tomorrow's championship match had been clinched.

Hurrion's match at No. 2 went unfinished, yet the Weymouth, England native won his first set, 6-4, and was one game away from the winning the match.

Radford improves to 13-8 overall and will take on the winner of #3 UNC Asheville vs. #2 Campbell in tomorrow's Big South championship.
