BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Jenna Wacaster homered twice and
Autumn Owen's walk-off bomb gave Gardner-Webb a 5-3 victory over the Campbell Fighting Camels in game one, but Campbell took game two, 8-3.
Game One: Gardner-Webb 5, Campbell 3
Owen's two-run home run gave Gardner-Webb the walk-off win and helped the 'Dogs snap a two-game skid, but it was J. Wacaster who batted in a team-high three runs with a pair of homers.
Gardner-Webb (22-13, 3-4 Big South) got on the scoreboard first when Wacaster led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run that cleared the left field fence. The Runnin' Bulldogs had a chance to take the lead but left a runner in scoring position with
Meredith Ferguson ending the inning stranded on second base.
Campbell (16-20, 7-6 Big South) tied the contest with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the third, and the Fighting Camels took the lead the following inning when Bri Bryant doubled up the middle.
Campbell extended its lead to 3-1 three innings later, in the top of the sixth, but J. Wacaster blasted her second home run of the day - this time a two-run shot to center field – to tie the contest. Her home run came with one-out and Owen on base.
In the circle,
Brooke Perry allowed only one Fighting Camel to reach base in the top of the seventh, and Gardner-Webb got the walk-off win in the bottom of the frame.
Kaylee Wacaster began Gardner-Webb's half of the seventh by beating out a single to the third baseman and advancing to second on a wild throw. After
Annamarie Warley was retired, Owen stepped into the batter's box and hit the first pitch she was thrown over the fence in left center field to give the Runnin' Bulldlogs a 5-3 win.
Perry improved to 14-7 and threw all seven innings. She allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out seven. Campbell's Haley Hutchins (6-10) took the loss. She also threw a complete game but allowed five runs – all of which came via the long ball. Hutchins struck out three and walked a pair.
At the plate, it was J. Wacaster's day to shine. The sophomore infielder went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs. She batted in three of Gardner-Webb's five runs. Owen had an equally impressive day at the plate as she went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI to help GWU earn the walk-off victory over its Big South rival.
Game Two: Gardner-Webb 5, Campbell 8
After scoring three runs in game one, Campbell plated three runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 6-0 lead in the nightcap.
Gardner-Webb (22-14, 3-5 Big South) got on the board with two runs in the third inning. K. Wacaster began the inning with a walk and Warley followed with an RBI double to right center. After moving to third on a groundout, Owen scored when Perry singled up the middle to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Campbell (17-20, 8-6 Big South) plated two runs in the fifth after both teams went three-up, three-down in the fourth frame. Kynadi Tipler singled with one out and Abby Perryman homered on the second pitch of her at-bat to put the Fighting Camels up, 8-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs scored their third run in the bottom of the fifth when Owen's sacrifice fly scored Warley, who tripled down the right field line with one out.
Laken Myers – who threw the final 2.2 innings of the contest – held Campbell scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings. Myers allowed just one hit in her appearance, a sixth inning single, and struck out three.
Gardner-Webb scored two runs in the final inning but could not complete the comeback. Perry's RBI double into the gap scored Warley, and
Abbey Goodrum, who pinch ran for Perry, scored when
Lily Pressley doubled down the right field line.
Campbell's Megan Richards got a strikeout to end the game, and Runnin' Bulldogs fell by three runs, 8-5.The three-run victory for the Fighting Camels helped Richards improve to 11-8 on the year. She struck out seven.
Reah Barger took the loss and dropped to 3-2 overall. Barger lasted just 1.1 innings in the circle and gave up five runs, two of which were earned.
Madi Lewis entered in relief of Barger and tossed three innings. Lewis surrendered three runs before being replaced by Myers who threw 2.2 innings of one-hit softball.
The two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow, Wednesday, April 3, at 5 p.m.
