Record-Setting Performance Highlights Gardner-Webb’s Weekend at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – One school record was set, along with four personal records and ten top-ten finishes as the Gardner-Webb men's and women's outdoor track and field teams took part in the two-day Duke Invitational, hosted by Duke University at Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium in Durham, N.C.
 
Natasha Akbarizadeh placed fourth in the women's hammer throw, setting a new GWU record with a distance of 62.68 meters. She bested her previous record of 62.16 meters, set earlier this season at the Terrier Relays.  Petra Jakeljic finished sixth with a mark of 56.58 meters.  Cailen Blaire finished 22nd at 46.88 meters.
 
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Carlos Williams, Patrick Sastre, Austin Buzzard, and Chase Thornhill finished fourth overall, timing in at 3:19.55.  The team of Tre Carson, Ezekiel Martin, Sam Hermanns, and Mitchell Brown finished 13th with a time of 3:33.36.
 
In the men's 400-meter run, Chase Thornhill finished tenth overall, clocking in at 48.24 seconds.  Carlos Williams placed 36th with a personal-best time of 49.51 seconds, moving into the top-ten list in program history.
 
Kenny VanVorst took home a 13th place finish in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 52.36 meters.
 
In the men's shot put, Julian Smallwood placed 14th with a toss of 15.59 meters.  Nate Wonsley IV finished 23rd at 13.37 meters.
 
In the women's 4x400 meter relay, the grouping of Khalilah Conway, Diviana Forrest, Hannah Sparacio, and Hannah Jones placed 16th, clocking in at 4:07.32.
 
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Kira Ramsey, Hannah Sparacio, Maya Mallory, and Diviana Forrest finished 21st, timing in at 49.11 seconds.
 
Taliyah Wade finished 24th in the women's shot put with a mark of 11.84 meters.
 
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Hannah Sparacio finished 33rd, timing in at 1:06.35
 
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Ezekiel Martin clocked in at 10:56.23 to finish 36th.
 
Austin Buzzard placed 45th in the men's 400-meter hurdles, timing in at 58.70 seconds.  Ezekiel Martin finished 55th with a time of 1:01.61.
 
Diviana Forrest placed 46th in the women's 400-meter run, timing in at 58.55 seconds.
 
Hannah Jones finished 62nd in the women's 800-meter run, crossing the line at 2:21.34.  Amy Turlington placed 80th, clocking in at 2:25.74.
 
In the women's 5,000-meter run, Logan McGuirt placed 63rd with a time of 21:22.99 and Courtney Kanetzke finished 67th at 22:21.14, setting a new personal record.
 
Khalilah Conway finished 64th in the women's 200-meter dash, crossing the line with a time of 26.11 seconds in her first time in the event.
 
Sandra Bolstad finished 88th in the women's 1,500-meter run, timing in at 5:15.14.  Faith Parandhamaia finished 98th with a time of 5:30.76, a new personal record.
 
Patrick Sastre timed in at 2:14.77 in the men's 800-meter run, finishing 92nd.
 
In the men's 1,500-meter run, Bogdan Podgaisky finished 94th with a time of 4:56.43.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action next weekend at the Don McGarey Invitational, hosted by Kennesaw State.  The two-day meet begins Friday, April 26 in Kennesaw, Ga.
