
Three GWU Golfers Earn Big South Conference Postseason Honors For 2018-2019

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb men's golf capped a strong postseason with several individual honors, as three golfers were honored following the 2019 Big South Conference Men's Golf Championship.
Junior Steffen Smith brought home the most hardware, earning a spot on the league's All-Conference Team and also making the Big South All-Championship Team for his top-5 individual finish. Smith, who carries a 3.97 cumulative GPA in business administration, was also named to the Big South's All-Academic Team.
The former Greater Atlanta Christian School star led Gardner-Webb this season with a 72.62 stroke average through 35 rounds, posting a team-best five top-10 finishes – including each of his last two tournaments.
He saved his best for last, finishing fifth individually to help Gardner-Webb to a third-place finish in the stroke play tournament (54 holes) last weekend. That allowed the Runnin' Bulldogs to advance to the championship match play round, which saw GWU finish as runner up to Campbell.
Gardner-Webb's Zack Byers and Andy Yang each earned a spot on the Big South Conference All-Freshman Team following the 2019 season.
Byers posted a 74.90 stroke average for the season, which ranked second on the team. He posted a top finish of 14th at the 2019 Elon Phoenix Invitational – which also saw him earn Big South Freshman of the Week honors.
Yang carried a 74.99 stroke average over 23 rounds in 2018-2019 and also saved his best tournament for last – finishing a season-best 13th individually at the 2019 Big South Conference stroke play Championship.
