June 06, 2019 | Men's Tennis
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Maximilian Scholl and Millen Hurrion both represented Gardner-Webb men's tennis in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Region poll.
Scholl (Stuttgart, Germany / School Korntal-Munchingen) finished 2019 ranked 15th in the singles poll, while he and Hurrion (Weymouth, England / Budmouth College) claimed the 10th and final spot in the doubles poll. This is the first time that the men's tennis program has a had singles player and doubles team ranked in the year-end regional rankings.
"I am so proud of where GWU tennis is in relation to not only the top of the Big South Conference but also the Carolina region," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We have players who are being recognized by others and could play anywhere in the United States but decided to win at Gardner-Webb. I owe Max and Millen so much for what they accomplished while here. Our future is also in good hands for the 2019-20 season with several new players coming to Boiling Springs."
In singles action, Scholl, a First-Team All-Big South singles player and All-Academic team member, played each of his matches in the top flight. After a season-opening loss to Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest, who finished 2019 as the second-ranked player in the region, he reeled off 18 straight victories. The Stuttgart, Germany native went a perfect 7-0 in Big South regular season play to lead Gardner-Webb to its first ever Big South regular season title.
Scholl's winning streak began on February 1 at Coastal Carolina in non-conference action. In league play, only one of his seven victories took a full three sets. Scholl also had an outstanding fall as he made a run to the Elite Eight of the ITA Regionals. He finished the year ranked 125th in the final ITA singles poll and will now depart Boiling Springs for the Princeton, N.J. where he will serve as an assistant coach with the Princeton Tigers women's tennis squad.
In doubles action, Scholl and Hurrion, a First-Team All-Big South pair, finished the season 15-1 overall, with their record shaping up in similar fashion to Scholl's singles mark. After a loss at Wake Forest to start the year, the pair had an unblemished record over their next 15 completed matches. The duo was ranked as high as 26th in the ITA doubles poll.
Scholl and Hurrion cruised through Big South Conference play with their closest match being a 7-5 win over Hampton. On five occasions, including three consecutive, the pair surrendered just one game to opposing doubles teams.
In addition to a stellar spring season, they won the Farnsworth Invitational championship in the fall. Held on the campus of Princeton University, the Farnsworth was formatted similar to the Davis Cup with each pair playing one doubles and two singles matches against a pair from an opposing school. The winner of two of the three matches advanced to the next round. Scholl and Hurrion beat pairs from Drexel, William & Mary and Temple to reach the championship. They hoisted the championship trophy with a win over the home team.
