SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb women's soccer played its lone exhibition match of 2019 and fell to the Wofford Terriers, 1-0, tonight.
"Our goal is always to gain experience during an exhibition, and we want to win, but things didn't go our way tonight," said head coach
Mike Varga. "We will learn from the things we did poorly and continue to build on the positives to get ready for our regular season opener at Davidson nextThursday.
Gardner-Webb took three shots in the first seven minutes, but Wofford capitalized in the 11
th-minute to take a one-goal lead.
The 'Dogs would control the pace for the remainder of the first period but could not find the equalizer despite taking five shots and attempting two corner kicks before the intermission.
In the 56
th minute, sophomore
Alisha Holcombe had a shot on goal but could not score the equalizer for the 'Dogs.
Stina Kleppe, the Big South Preseason Attacking Player of the Year sent one wide of the net in the 70
th minute, which would end up as Gardner-Webb's final shot of the night.
Gardner-Webb outshot Wofford, 10-5 with Kleppe and
Jada Newton taking two shots each. The 'Dogs controlled the ball for 60 percent of the match, compared to 40 percent for the Terriers.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will get back on the practice field tomorrow and prepare for the regular season opener at Davidson on August 25 at 7 p.m.
