Runnin' Bulldogs Battle ETSU Bucs to 1-1 Draw

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the second consecutive match, Mike Varga's Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs played extra time, and this time they battled the ETSU Bucs to a 1-1 draw.

"I think we competed for bigger stretches of the game tonight," Varga said. "It's tough to play Friday and Sunday at times. It was sloppy at times, but we worked hard tonight and that's what we wanted."

Zeroes did not remain on the scoreboard for long, as Gardner-Webb's Jada Newton scored in the fourth minute to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on top. Newton received a pass from Maddie Turlington, Gardner-Webb's assists leader last season, and dribbled 20 yards to inside the six where she converted.

In the 11th minute, Stina Kleppe nearly netted her third goal of the holiday weekend, but her header was deflected by ETSU's Tennessee Mrozek. Mrozek deflected the ball off the near post and managed to gain control of the ball before Kleppe could attempt another shot.

Two minutes later, the Bucs equalized when Elena Pisani scored off a corner kick by Kendall King. Katelyn Kellogg had two touches but could not secure the ball as ETSU made it a 1-1 contest.

Gardner-Webb (0-3-1) nearly pulled ahead in the 17th and 19th minutes, but Anna Fish's header and Newton's attempt were both saved.

ETSU (1-1-2) began to control the pace in the 20th minute and earned three corners in a nine-minute span before Turlington gained possession for the Runnin' Bulldogs and fired a shot wide of the net.

The two squads each had their chance to pull ahead before the intermission but were both unsuccessful. In the 33rd minute, Sarah Connolly's attempt nearly put the Bucs in front but hit the top of the crossbar. Three minutes later, Kleppe's strike from almost 30 yards out was on target but was snagged by Mrozek by the near post.

At the half, the two teams were tied at one goal a piece.

Over the final 65 minutes, which included two overtime periods, neither team scored, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Despite no goals, there were ample chances for both teams. Kleppe had chances in the 52nd and 53rd minutes to put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead, but both shots were saved. Her attempt in the 53rd minute was grabbed by Mrozek who left her feet and barely managed to grab hold of the ball.

Gardner-Webb's best chance to take the lead came when Ty Snell earned a one-on-one opportunity just inside the six, but sent the ball inches over the crossbar. Over the final 18 minutes, Gardner-Webb managed the only shot on goal, as Kleppe's shot was redirected into the hands of Mrozek with 79 seconds remaining in regulation.

After a quiet first overtime, Newton and Klpepe both attempted game-winners in the final 10 minutes of play, while Kellogg stopped ETSU's on shot on goal in the 108th minute.

The draw moves the 'Dogs to 0-3-1 overall, while the Bucs are now 1-1-2.

Gardner-Webb took an impressive 24 shots, but ETSU also managed a high number in 13. Only four of the Bucs' shots were on goal, but the Runnin' Bulldogs placed over 50 percent (13-of-24) on target. Kleppe led the home squad with 12 attempts and six on goal.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action next Friday, September 6 at Mercer. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
