BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb's
Emily Jonas scored off a corner kick by
Stina Kleppe in the 29
th minute, but the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers earned a 3-1 victory in Greene-Habrison Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
"We made some mistakes today," said
Mike Varga. "We play a tough schedule; we've got to be able to focus for the entire match. There are times we take breaks, and it catches up with us. We haven't had anybody on our schedule where we can take a break, make a mental mistake and be okay. That's where we're getting caught right now."
After a relatively quiet first 20 minutes, the intensity picked up for both teams with two combined goals over the next 10 minutes.
Coastal Carolina (2-4-1) struck first when Hannah Miller scored in the 25
th minute. Lauren Denning controlled on the left side of the box and crossed the ball to Miller inside the six. Miller gained control, turned, kept the ball on the ground and stuck in inside the far post past
Paula Suarez Is to give the Chanticleers the 1-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb (0-5-1) answered in the 29
th minute when Jonas scored her first goal of the year off a corner kick by Kleppe.
Ty Snell missed a header attempt off the corner and ball found Jonas who fired a shot into the upper 90 for the equalizer.
Each team had one shot on target in the remaining 21 minutes. Coastal's Mackenzie Gibbs had an attempt from 20 yards out, but sent it right into the arms of Suarez Is. For Gardner-Webb,
Aubrie Jackson placed a shot on goal and forced the Chanticleers' Rylee Atterberry to make a diving punch out by the far post.
At the half, the two teams were deadlocked at one.
In the second half, the Chanticleers took four of the first five shots and converted in the 58
th minute when Loranna Austin found Megan Brouse on a cross. The ball hit Brouse's knee inside the six and she placed on inside the far post to give CCU a two-goal.
Kleppe attempted a corner kick in the 60
th minute and sent a shot high of goal three minutes later, but before the 70-minute mark, Coastal Carolina extended its lead to 3-1.
Gibbs passed a ball along the left side to Brouse who then sent it to Sigurvinsdottir. Sugurvinsdottir dribbled inside the box and sent her attempt into the left side of the net past Suarez Is.
Gardner-Webb had five shots after Coastal scored, including a pair of shots by Jackson and a shot on target but
Jaasiel Forde, but the Chanticleers were able to keep their advantage at two goals and left Boiling Springs with a 3-1 win.
