Men’s Swimming Edged By Wingate, 135-127, Saturday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's swimming team posted 29 top-five finishes, including five event wins, but dropped a narrow 135-127 decision to nationally ranked Wingate inside Bost Pool on Saturday afternoon.
 
The meet got started with the 200-yard medley relay, which saw the team of Brady Fields, Jordan Mintz, Tim Bennett, and Zach Dingfield place first with a time of 1:32.13.  The quartet of Michael Robinson, Jonathan Frye, Cullen Fields, and Seggio Bernardina followed in second place with a time of 1:35.75.
 
Christian Jann led the 'Dogs in the 1,000-yard freestyle, timing in at 10:15.20 to finish fifth.
 
Zach Dingfield brought home the 200-yard freestyle title, touching the wall at 1:42.73.  Tim Bennett placed fifth with a time of 1:45.84.
 
In the 100-yard backstroke, Brady Fields placed first with a time of 51.36 seconds.  Michael Robinson finished fourth, clocking in at 54.37 seconds.
 
Jordan Mintz finished first overall in the 100-yard breaststroke, timing in at 57.69 seconds.  Jonathan Frye placed third with a time of 58.99 seconds.
 
In the 200-yard butterfly, Chase Mattingly placed second, clocking in at 1:53.26 seconds.  Cullen Fields followed in third place with a time of 1:55.96.
 
Zach Dingfield earned a first-place result in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.63 seconds, as GWU swept the top three spots in the event.  Brady Fields placed second at 21.78 seconds and Seggio Bernardina finished third with a time of 21.88 seconds.
 
Cullen Fields placed second in the 200-yard backstroke, followed by Michael Robinson in third at 1:55.91, Bryan Dunne in fourth at 1:56.18, and Tim Bennett in fifth at 1:56.75.
 
Jordan Mintz led a trio of top-five finishers in the 200-yard breaststroke, placing second with a time of 2:05.41.  Jonathan Frye followed in third, clocking in at 2:09.59, while Justin Conklin placed fourth at 2:13.14.
 
Chase Mattingly finished third in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 4:51.00.
 
In the 100-yard butterfly, Brady Fields led GWU with a time of 50.97 seconds to finish in second place.  Cullen Fields followed in third with a time of 51.11 seconds, while Tim Bennett placed fourth at 51.84 seconds and John O'Connell finished fifth at 52.44 seconds.
 
Christian Jann placed second in the 200-yard IM, clocking in at 1:57.49.  Jordan Mintz followed in third with a time of 1:57.73.
 
The day wrapped up with the 400-yard freestyle relay, in which the team of Seggio Bernardina, Drew Mintz, Chase Mattingly, and Dowdy Sarvis placed third with a time of 3:11.01.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, January 17 at Auburn at 1:00 pm.
