BOILING SPRINGS – Charleston Southern made 5-of-7 shots in the second overtime, including all three from long range, and the Buccaneers beat Gardner-Webb 92-83 Saturday afternoon in a tight Big South men's basketball contest.

Gardner-Webb (day 8-11, 3-4 Big South) played its second overtime game of the week – and third of the season in league play – but snapped a two-game win streak. The win was just the second in 13 tries in Paul Porter Arena for Charleston Southern (11-9, 5-3 Big South).

Jose Perez hit a three-pointer with 4.8 seconds left to tie the game at 74-74 near the end of the first overtime, but the Buccaneers came out on fire over the next five minutes.

Deontaye Buskey nailed a three just 17 seconds in and Duncan Lexander hit another with 4:00 left in the period to put the Bucs in control. Gardner-Webb got as close as three points on another Perez bucket with 2:29 to play – but Buskey answered with another long ball to put Charleston Southern up 88-82 with 90 seconds left.

Gardner-Webb missed its final five field goal attempts, and Charleston Southern did enough at the free throw line to salt away the win.

Fleming was the star for Charleston Southern, finishing one rebound shy of a triple-double. He scored 24 of his game-high 31 points in the second half and overtime, finished with 11 assists, six blocked shots, four steals and nine rebounds – overcoming seven turnovers in a game-high 49 minutes played.

Lexander scored 15 before fouling out, Buskey had 14, Travis Anderson scored 13 and Ty Jones scored 10 before he fouled out.

Charleston Southern shot 62.5 percent in the second half, using a 12-0 run to erase a halftime deficit and take control of the game.

The Bucs led 55-43 with 8:28 to play in regulation, but Gardner-Webb rallied with a 22-8 run to go up 65-63 with 27.2 seconds left on a Perez free throw. Fleming answered, however, driving for a layup with 18.7 seconds left to tie the game. Gardner-Webb had an open look to win the game, but Jaheam Cornwall could not get the driving runner to go down.

The Buccaneers finished the game with solid shooting numbers, going 34-of-63 from the floor (54.0 percent) and 13-of-31 from deep (41.9 percent). The Buccaneers overcame 19 turnovers, with Gardner-Webb only able to convert those miscues into nine points.

Gardner-Webb jumped out to a double figures lead in the first half, but led just 33-28 at the break after the Bucs started to make shots from long range again.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were led by Perez with 21 points and Cornwall with 16, but the Runnin' Bulldogs shot just 39.1 percent from the floor on Saturday (27-of-69) and 8-of-21 from long distance (38.1 percent).

Eric Jamison, Jr. finished with 14 points and Nate Johnson scored 11 in the loss.

The Runnin' Bulldogs hit the road again next week, traveling to UNC Asheville on Thursday, January 30 for a 7 pm tip in Kimmel Arena.
