Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall at Hampton, 63-58, Saturday Afternoon

HAMPTON, Va. – A cold shooting afternoon doomed the Runnin' Bulldogs as Gardner-Webb dropped a 63-58 decision at Hampton in Big South Conference women's basketball action.
 
Neither team found its stride in the first quarter, as Gardner-Webb (6-6, 1-2 Big South) led Hampton (6-6, 2-1 Big South) by a 9-8 score after the first ten minutes of play.
 
The Pirates pulled away in the second period, making 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) of its attempts in the frame, while GWU made just 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) of its shots in the quarter to fall behind by a 32-22 margin at the half.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to a hot start after halftime with a quick 11-2 run in the first 2:21 of play, but Hampton answered with a 9-0 run over the next 5:31 to build a 43-33 lead with 2:07 on the clock, and the Pirates would hold a 45-38 lead as play headed to the final period.
 
Hampton pushed its lead out to as many as 12 points at 57-45 with 6:00 remaining the contest, but the 'Dogs would attempt to rally once again with a 11-1 run to come within two points of the lead after a pair of free throws by Gabrielle Caponegro with 38 seconds remaining.
 
The Pirates would make five of their six free throw attempts over the closing seconds to seal a 63-58 decision.
 
Gardner-Webb went 18-of-60 (30.0 percent) from the floor on the day, including 6-of-27 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc and was 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the free throw line.  Hampton made 25-of-52 (48.1 percent) buckets on the afternoon, including 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from long distance and was 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from the charity stripe.
 
Carley Plentovich scored a game-high 28 points on 8-of-22 shooting to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs.  Savannah Plentovich added 13 points and seven rebounds.
 
Nylah Young led Hampton with 21 points and 11 rebounds.  Laren VanArsdale added 14 points for the Pirates.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to the friendly confines of Paul Porter Arena for their next bout, squaring off against Winthrop on Monday, January 6 at 7:00 pm.  The matchup will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
