CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian used a 10-0 run late in the third quarter to on to hand Gardner-Webb a 69-60 loss on Wednesday evening in the Big South Conference opener for both programs.
Gardner-Webb (0-5, 0-1 Big South) held a three-point lead at 26-23 over Presbyterian (2-1, 1-0 Big South) at halftime, but the Blue Hose quickly scored seven unanswered points at the start of the third quarter to claim the lead.
GWU tied the game at 33-33 with 5:41 left in the frame on a three pointer by
Ki'Ari Cain, but Presbyterian answered with a 17-5 run, including a stretch of ten consecutive points, to build a 13-point lead at 48-35 with 1:24 on the clock.
PC sealed the contest in the fourth period, pushing its lead to as many as 18 points with 3:20 left on the clock, but the Runnin' Bulldogs fought back, closing the game on a 12-3 run to set the final score at 69-60.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were 21-of-57 (36.8 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-18 from long distance and 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Presbyterian was 22-of-59 (37.3 percent) on the evening, including 3-of-13 from beyond the arc and 22-of-28 from the charity stripe.
Alexis Hueston paced the GWU offense, scoring 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the bench, followed by Cain with 11 points on a 4-of-8 performance, including 3-of-5 from behind the three-point line.
Presbyterian had four scorers in double digits, led by Trinity Johnson and Tionna Carter, who each had 16 points on the night. Jade Compton followed with 11 points and Tess Santos added 10 points.
