BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb used a 13-0 run midway through the third quarter to spark a 70-56 win over Hampton in Big South Conference action on Wednesday evening inside Paul Porter Arena.
Gardner-Webb (2-6, 2-1 Big South) held a two-point lead over Hampton (0-5, 0-3 Big South) with 7:26 on the clock, but the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with 13 unanswered points over the next 5:21, capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by
Lauren Bevis with 2:05 on the clock.
The 'Dogs led by as many as 19 points following a three-pointer by
Emma Capps with 7:18 to go in the final period, but the Pirates would make one last comeback effort, scoring nine unanswered points to cut the GWU lead to ten with 4:37 to go. A mid-range jumper by
Gabrielle Caponegro stifled Hampton's run with 3:20 on the clock, and the Runnin' Bulldogs would go on to take a 14-point victoru.
Gardner-Webb made 27-of-63 baskets (42.9 percent) including 10-of-27 from beyond the arc. Hampton was 23-of-54 (42.6 percent), but was just 1-of-8 from long distance. GWU edged the Pirates on the glass, 37-36, and forced 26 turnovers, leading to 24 points.
Jhesskya Williams paced the GWU offense with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting, followed by
Ki'Ari Cain with 10 points on a 3-of-9 outing. Ten different Runnin' Bulldogs added points to the stat sheet on the day.
Victoria Mason and Nas Nigatu each had 14 points to lead the Pirates.
