ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb's men's tennis falls on in the road at South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon, 2-4.
Following the conclusion of the match, Head Coach
Mike Griffith "We won the doubles point and had momentum, but SC State talent got us in the end."
The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to win the point in doubles with the victories coming from the #2 and #3 positions.
The afternoon started with the #2s doubles match finishing, where
Alex Griffiths and
Sebastian Harris winning the set 6-3. Gardner-Webb's
Breno Plentz and
Ross Gilbert lost the #1 position by a score of 6-7.
The doubles point came down to the #3s where Gardner-Webb's
Stefano Puga and
Victor Putter were able to win the set 6-4.
South Carolina State took control of the singles matches early by winning the first 3. Bonifacio defeated
Stefano Puga 6-2, 6-4, in the #5 position. Following the conclusion of that match, the #2s finished with
Ross Gilbert losing, 3-6, 5-7. The #1s finished next with
Breno Plentz losing 6-2, 6-4.
Sebastian Harris' match in the #4 position concluded next with him picking up his second straight victory. The scores of the sets were 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
The match was clinched by South Carolina State from the #3 position when Gbadoe defeated
Victor Putter 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
The #6 position matchup ended unfinished, but when the match was called,
Connor Enslin was losing 0-5 in the first set.
This was the first victory of the season for South Carolina State who now stands at 1-1. This loss puts Gardner-Webb at 0-4 on the season hoping for a different result tomorrow at Georgia Southern with a start time of 11 am. The match tomorrow will be the action that the Runnin' Bulldogs see until their first home match on February 12
th against Wofford.
