Gardner-Webb Opens Doubleheader With 4-1 Win over St. Bonaventure Saturday Morning

BLACKSBURG, V.A. – Gardner-Webb defeated St. Bonaventure by a score of 4-1 Saturday morning to start their doubleheader with a win.
"We came out and jumped out in doubles to win that so important point to go up 1-0," said head coach Mike Griffith following the match. "St. Bonaventure did not go away and we had to dig deep for a win."
Griffith was most impressed with the play of true freshman Alex Griffiths, saying "I am very proud of everyone, but for a true freshman, Griffiths, to win the deciding point after dropping the first set is huge."
Gardner-Webb was able to secure the doubles point after a strong performance from the duos in the #1 and #2 positions.
The first doubles match to conclude were the #1 doubles position when Breno Plentz and Ross Gilbert won 6-1. The #2s were the next to finish with Sebastian Harris and Griffiths winning 6-1. The #3 match did not finish, but St. Bonaventure was leading over GWU's Stefano Puga and Victor Putter 5-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs started with two quick wins in singles matches to get up 3-0. The first of these to conclude was Harris winning in the #5 position 6-2, 6-1. The #2s finished up next with Gilbert winning 6-4, 6-2.
St. Bonaventure secured their one point of the day when Putter lost by scores of 3-6, 5-7.
Griffiths, playing in the #4 position, was able to secure the victory by battling back to win his match after losing the opening set. The set scores were 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(10-2).
The matches going on in the #1 and #6 positions did not finish. In the #1 match, Plentz won the first set 6-3, lost the second 6-7(10-4), and was losing the third 4-1 when the match finished. In the #6 position, Puga lost the first set 5-7, won the second 6-3, and was winning the third by a score of 5-2 when the match concluded.
Next up for the Runnin' Bulldogs is the second match of the doubleheader from Virginia Tech at 5:00 pm against the host, Virginia Tech.
