BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Virginia Tech topped Gardner-Webb on Saturday night on a 6-1 decision.
The Hokies were able to win the doubles point with strong performances from their pairs.
The night started with Gardner-Webb's #2,
Sebastian Harris and
Alex Griffiths, losing 2-6. Following the conclusion of that match,
Breno Plentz and
Ross Gilbert lost the #1 position 3-6.
Jacob Wall and
Stefano Puga did not finish their match from the #3 position, but when it was called, they were losing 3-5.
Virginia Tech was able to control Gardner-Webb in the singles matches, winning the first five matches 2-0.
The #6 singles match was the first to finish with Puga losing 6-2, 6-0.
Victor Putter, in the #3 position, was the next to finish, losing 6-1, 6-3.
Virginia Tech clinched the match win when Matthis Ross defeated Griffiths in a close match in the #3 position with set scores of 6-3, 6-4.
Shortly following that conclusion, the #2 position match wrapped up with
Ross Gilbert losing 6-2, 6-4.
Plentz put up a great match against #120 Mitch Harper but fell to him 6-3, 6-4 in the #1 position.
Gardner-Webb was able to secure a point in the last match to finish after Harris' brilliant performance. The set scores were 6-4, 3-6, 10-3.
This puts Gardner-Webb at 2-6 on the season, ending their two-match win streak.
