BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb softball took out Robert Morris and Valparaiso in tournament action this Saturday afternoon at Brinkley Stadium with an offensive explosion and late game heroics displayed in the two games. Gardner-Webb defeated Robert Morris 12-4, and Valparaiso 3-2.
Game One Recap:
In the top of the first inning Robert Morris had four hits and capped it off with a grand slam to get an early 4-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb answered back quickly with an RBI single by
Brooke Perry to bring
Trinity Sterrett home to start cutting into the lead.
Leading of in the bottom of the second inning
Abbey Goodrum hit a home run to left field, making it a 4-2 game.
In the bottom of the third inning Perry hit a home run cutting the lead to one run. The game was then tied by an RBI double by
Jenna Wacaster, bringing Perry home.
Gardner-Webb took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, with
Andrea Lyon hitting a 2 RBI double making the score 6-4. Perry hit a three run homer to straight-away center field.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Owen hit an RBI triple scoring Sterrett making it a 10-4 game. Lyon hit a 2 RBI home run to walk the game off 12-4.
Game Two Recap:
Valparasio got up early in the game after an unearned run by Westphal in the second inning. Tonoian grounded out to second, advancing all the runners which brought home Milkowski.
Of the last 22 batters Perry faced, she retired 20 of them, while allowing one hit and one walk.
The game was tied in the bottom of the seventh by a two run homer by Wacaster that sent the game into extra innings.
A walk-off RBI single by Lyon ended the game putting Gardner-Webb at 2-0 on Saturday.
The tournament concludes tomorrow as Gardner-Webb softball takes on Robert Morris on Sunday February 15
th at 12:00 PM.
