Harris and Griffiths Named Big South Player and Freshman of the Week

Charlotte, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's tennis players Sebastian Harris (Berkshire, England) and Alex Griffiths (Solihull, U.K.) win both the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week and Big South Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week for the matches between during Feb. 10-16. These are the first players this season to win either of these awards for Gardner-Webb.
"A very well-deserved accomplishment for them both," head coach Mike Griffith said when the honors were announced. "They both have different qualities but one thing that they have in common is the desire to practice and compete hard for the team and that is important. I'm very proud of them and they are just getting started."
Harris, a sophomore, was able to win all three of his singles matches this week. The week's performance started with a win at the No. 4 position over Belmont-Abbey with a 6-1, 6-1 win. He also was able to win a No. 5 position match against St. Bonaventure winning 6-2, 6-1, followed by a 6-4, 3-6, 1(3)-0 win over Virginia Tech in the #5 position. Harris was able to win two of his doubles matches in the No. 2 position. He won the match against Belmont-Abbey by a score of 6-1 and St. Bonaventure 6-1.
Griffiths, a freshman, was able to win two singles matches and two doubles matches on the week. In the No. 3 singles match he won against Belmont-Abbey 6-4, 6-4. In the St. Bonaventure match, Griffiths clinched the match with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) win from the #4 position. In the doubles matches, he won against Belmont-Abbey by a score of 6-4, and in the St. Bonaventure match he won 6-1.
