BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up another set of wins on the second day of the Gardner-Webb/AmericInn Lodge & Suites Softball Tournament at Brinkley Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (13-3) defeated Northern Kentucky, 7-2, in the first matchup and triumphed over Eastern Illinois, 6-0, in the second game of the afternoon.
GAME ONE:
Northern Kentucky jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Tatum Biddle drew a bases-loaded walk from GWU pitcher
Andrea Lyon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by
Kayleigh Nicholson.
GWU seized control of the contest in the bottom of the fifth, plating six runs.
Abbey Goodrum provided the go-ahead RBI single, and
Jenna Wacaster and
Weslyn Almond both had RBI hits in the frame.
NKU scored once more in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Hailey Whitmer.
Brooke Perry earned the win in the circle for GWU, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work for the 'Dogs.
Taylor Ginther took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
GAME TWO:
Gardner-Webb took control of Saturday's nightcap early with a four-run first inning.
Andrea Lyon drove in a pair of runs on a RBI double, later followed by a two-run home run by
Brooke Perry.
GWU expanded its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Lyon.
Perry tossed a complete game shutout to earn the win for the 'Dogs, allowing just two base hits with nine strikeouts.
Jade Montgomery took the loss for Eastern Illinois, allowing six runs on seven base hits in five innings of work.
Gardner-Webb softball will be back in action tomorrow, wrapping up the Gardner-Webb/AmericInn Lodge & Suites Softball Tournament at Brinkley Stadium with a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's. The first game is set for a 12:00 pm start time.
