Runnin’ Bulldogs Finish Action at Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va.. – On Saturday afternoon, Gardner-Webb Track and Field finished up the final day of competition at the 2020 Big South Track and Field Indoor Championships at the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech. At the end of competition, the women ranked ninth with 25 points, and the men ranked seventh with 44 points.
 
Ryan McGuffin finished tenth overall in the men's heptathlon with 3,551 points. In Saturday's heptathlon events, McGuffin hit a mark of 2.93 meters in the pole vault, and ran a time of 3:05.16 in the 1,000-meter run. 
 
Karmen Taylor placed fifth overall in the women's weight throw by hitting a mark of 15.61 meters, setting a new personal record that ranks tenth in GWU history.  Taliyah Wade finished seventh with a personal-best distance of 15.18 meters.
 
For the women's one-mile run, Sandra Bolstad finished in 16th place with a time of 5:38.40.
 
In the men's one-mile run, Matthew Cloninger placed 16th with a time of 4:54.57.
 
Shylee Stocks placed fifth in the women's 400-meter run with a personal-best time of 56.90 seconds, a time that ranks second in GWU history.
 
Chase Thornhill had a big first place finish in the men's 400-meter run with a time of 47.77 seconds, besting the program-record time of 48.17 seconds he set in yesterday's prelims.
 
For the women's pole vault, Louise Schmidtgen placed fourth with a mark of 3.51 meters, Karin Sastre placed fifth with a mark of 3.51 meters, Sophia Smith took eighth place with a mark of 3.21 meters, and Randy Campbell took tenth with a mark of 3.06 meters.
 
In the men's weight throw, Josh Fischer placed sixth overall with a distance of 16.97 meters.  Kenny VanVorst finished eighth with a mark of 16.06 meters, and Clay Hamilton placed 13th with a mark of 14.43 meters.
 
Austin Evans placed eighth overall in the men's triple jump hitting a mark of 13.86 meters, which is a new personal best for Evans.
 
In the men's 800-meter run, Patrick Sastre took third place overall with a time of 1:54.87 at the finish. 
 
Chase Thornhill placed second overall in the men's 200-meter run, clocking a time of 21.47 seconds at the finish line. Thornhill's finish marks a personal best for him, and the fastest time in program history, besting the previous record of 21.83 seconds set by Kevin Prime in 2005.

In the women's 3,000-meter run, Courtney Kanetzke placed 24th with a time of 12:34.56.  Logan McGuirt followed in 25th with a time of 12:57.16.
 
The women's 4 x 400-meter relay squad of Khalilah Conway, Shylee Stocks, Kelsey Houser, Faith Parandhamaia took eighth in  with a time of 4:04.23.

In the men's 4 x 400-meter relay, the quartet of Carlos Williams, Joe Waller, Chase Thornhill, and Patrick Sastre placed fourth with a time of 3:22.05.

Louise Schmidtgen and Clay Hamilton were recognized at the conclusion of the day's events, earning Big South Conference All-Academic Team honors.

The Runnin' Bulldogs Outdoor Track and Field season kicks off on March 19th in Charlotte, N.C. at the 49er Classic.
