Nate Johnson Named Big South Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb junior guard Nate Johnson was named Big South Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Sunday afternoon, following a clutch week on the hardwood.

The Miami, Fla., standout averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in two full games last week, and scored 10 of his 17 points to complete the second half of a suspended game win on Monday night vs. Hampton.

Johnson's 21-point outing on Thursday at Charleston Southern clinched third place for Gardner-Webb in the final league standings – and the program's highest ever seed in the upcoming Hercules Tires Big South Conference Championship.

He continued to shine on Saturday, scoring 19 points in a 70-62 win at first-place Radford. With leading scorer for the game Jaheam Cornwall sidelined for a lengthy stretch and saddled with four personal fouls himself, Johnson scored 10 of his 19 points in the final 4:00 of play – halting a 14-2 Radford rally by sinking a pair of three-pointers to extend a three-point lead back to nine.

Johnson drained 11-of-24 shots from long range on the week (45.8%) and made 20-of-34 field goals overall (58.8%).

One of the Big South's top two-way standouts, Johnson is averaging 16.8 points per game against league foes and is sitting on career-high scoring and rebounding totals entering the postseason.

Gardner-Webb (15-15, 11-7 Big South) enters the Hercules Tires Big South Conference Men's Basketball Champion on Thursday at 2:30 pm against either UNC Asheville or Campbell. Those two play in Asheville on Tuesday night.

Thursday's game will stream live on ESPN3, with Mike Gleason and Nate Ross on the call from Radford, Va.
