BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Andrea Lyon hurled a complete-game shutout and Gardner-Webb moved its win streak to 14 games with a 1-0 win over Furman Sunday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (20-3) got the only run needed in the bottom of the first, when
Weslyn Almond belted a leadoff home run for an early advantage.
Lyon went to work from there, fanning six Paladins and scattering three hits in a dominant effort in the circle.
Almond paced Gardner-Webb offensively, going 3-for-3 with the key home run. Gardner-Webb collected five hits as a team, with
Brooke Perry and
Trinity Sterrett also in the hit column.
Gardner-Webb ended the game in style, as Perry stabbed a line drive to first, then doubled off a Paladin base runner to seral the victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the road next weekend for tournament action, traveling to the Duke University Softball Tournament March 6-8 in Durham, N.C. The 'Dogs will take on Howard on Friday at Noon in the opening game of the weekend.
