Gardner-Webb Tops Campbell, 1-0, To Finish Big South Softball Opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gardner-Webb finished what it started Thursday afternoon, wrapping up a 1-0 win over Campbell in the Big South Conference softball opener for both teams.

The game was suspended due to wet weather in the top of the sixth inning Wednesday with the Runnin' Bulldogs holding a 1-0 lead.

Brooke Perry (11-3) picked up the win, striking out seven Campbell batters in a complete-game shutout. Perry scattered three hits, allowed just one extra base hit and rolled five groundouts in the win.

Gardner-Webb scored the eventual winning run on Wednesday afternoon in the top of the sixth inning. Abbey Goodrum led off and was hit by a pitch, but was thrown out trying to steal second base. Weslyn Almond stepped in with a clutch single, then moved to second on a grounder by Trinity Sterrett. All-Big South slugger Autumn Owen delivered the big blow, belting a single up the middle to drive home Almond for a decisive 1-0 advantage.

Gardner-Webb (24-5, 1-0 Big South) collected six hits in the game, led by Almond's strong day in the leadoff spot. She finished 2-for-3 with the only run scored of the day. Owen also collected a pair of hits in the win.

Destini England had two of Campbell's three hits in a losing effort.

The remaining two games of the league series are postponed, per the Big South Conference office.
