BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb opened the fourth period with a 16-2 run, propelling the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 77-69 win over Big South Conference leader Campbell in the final regular season game of 2019-20 on Saturday afternoon inside Paul Porter Arena.
Gardner-Webb (18-11, 13-7 Big South) trailed Campbell (21-8, 16-4 Big South) by a 53-52 score as play headed to the final frame. The 'Dogs claimed the lead on their first possession, with
Savannah Plentovich burying a deep three to spark the game-sealing run.
GWU built its lead to as many as 13 points at 68-55 with 5:14 on the clock on a three-point basket by
Alexis Hueston, but the Camels would go on a quick 5-0 run to pull within single digits at 68-60 with 3:57 to go in the game.
Gardner-Webb thwarted any comeback attempt, with Hueston connecting with a layup on the teams following possession, keeping Campbell at bay throughout the remainder of the contest.
Carley Plentovich led all scorers on the day with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long distance.
Jhessyka Williams added 18 points on a 7-of-18 outing, followed by
Savannah Plentovich with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Lauren Bevis added 12 points from the bench.
Campbell had four scorers in double-figures, led by Taya Bolden with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
Gardner-Webb took advantage of Campbell's miscues throughout the contest, scoring 31 points off of the 26 Camel turnovers. GWU committed just 10 turnovers, leading to 11 points by Campbell.
Gardner-Webb now prepares for the 2020 Hercules Tires Big South Women's Basketball Championship. The Runnin' Bulldogs will enter the tournament at the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Hampton at 8:00 pm on Thursday evening in Buies Creek, N.C.
