Gardner-Webb's Smith Earns Spot On Big South Men's Golf All-Academic Team

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb senior Steffen Smith was named to the 2020 Big South Conference All-Academic Team on Tuesday.
The team was announced by the Big South Conference office and voted on by the league's sports information directors. It marked Smith's third-straight appearance on the Big South All-Academic Team.
Smith finished fourth in Scholar-Athlete balloting for the sport and carries a 3.87 cumulative GPA in his business major. The former Greater Atlanta Christian (Ga.) School standout led Gardner-Webb with a 72.33 scoring average in 2019-2020 – ranking eighth among Big South Conference golfers.
Smith also helped Gardner-Webb to the 2019 Elon Phoenix Invitational title, its second title in that tournament since 2016.
Smith, who has been one of the program's most consistent performers over the past four seasons, was an All-Big South Conference choice in 2018-2019 and earned a spot on the Big South's All-Championship team after finishing in the top-5 in Ninety Six, S.C., last season.
He helped Gardner-Webb to a second-place finish in the first ever Match Play championship in Big South history. He finished with a 72.62 stroke average as a junior.
