BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's tennis announced the addition of two student-athletes for the 2021 season on Wednesday afternoon.
Samuel Jones (Clayton, N.C. / Clayton HS) will enroll in the Fall of 2020, while Luka Eble (Stuttgart, Germany / USC Upstate) will enroll in the spring of 2021 as a graduate student.
Jones was rated as a three-star prospect by tennisrecruiting.net due to his numerous accomplishments on the court in his high school career. Jones has helped Clayton High win its first championship, in addition to its first back-to-back state championships in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He was the winner of the 2019 3A State Doubles Tournament, as well as the recipient of the 2019 3A State Sportsmanship Award. He was ranked in the top-ten in North Carolina for singles competition.
Head Coach Mike Griffith said this about the incoming freshman, "With Sam, we are getting someone hungry to improve his game." Griffith also mentioned how Jones was spoken of by his coaches, saying "Everyone talked about the amount of potential Sam has and how great of a great teammate and player he would be."
Eble has spent the past three seasons playing at USC Upstate. He was named to the 2020 Big South All-Academic Team in 2020 with a 3.97 GPA while seeking a degree in business administration. He has accumulated 30 career victories across singles and doubles competition in his time with the Spartans. Eble is originally from the same town in Germany of former GWU All-Conference tennis player, Maximilian Scholl.
"I've known Luka personally for several years and he is someone who I've watched play for the past three years," Griffith said. "Unfortunately, we were unable to get him here for his time as an undergraduate, but I am very excited he has decided to finish his collegiate career here at GWU."
With the addition of these two players, the 2021 team will see five newcomers. Griffith said this about the two newest signings, "Both Sam and Luka will not be ones to be outworked and I believe our 2021 team will be that team as well."
Jones will be joining Cathal Butler (Dublin, Ireland / Belvedere College), John Spring (Miramar Beach, Fla. / South Walton HS), and Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa / Waterkloof HS) in August of 2020. Eble will be enrolling in January of 2021.
