BOILING SPRINGS N.C. – Gardner-Webb earned seven wins on the day, but fell both visiting Chattanooga and The Citadel in Southern Conference wrestling action Sunday afternoon inside Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-5, 0-2 SoCon) got off to a quick start against the Mocs (4-2, 2-0 SoCon), earning wins in the first three matchups of the day.
In the first match of the dual,
Taylor Parks outlasted Weston Wichman in his first bout of the season to pick up an 8-7 decision at 157 pounds.
RJ Mosley followed by defeating Andrew Nicholson by a 12-4 major decision at the 165-pound weight class, giving GWU a 7-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb built its lead to 10-0 following the 174-point weight class matchup, with
Samuel Mora picking up a 12-5 decision over Carial Tarter.
Chattanooga answered, taking the following four matches, including by tech fall at 285 pound and major decision at 125 pounds to claim a 15-10 lead.
The 'Dogs stopped Chattanooga's run at the 133-pound weight class, as
Todd Carter picked up a takedown late in the final period to seal a 10-7 decision over Colton Landers, pulling GWU back within two points at 15-13.
The Mocs sealed the overall match win by claiming the bouts at 141 and 149 pounds.
The Citadel (2-2, 1-1 SoCon) took an early 3-0 lead over the Runnin' Bulldogs, the Mosley defeated Dazjon Casto by a 6-1 decision at 165 pounds, followed by a point deduction to the The Citadel's team score due to unsportsmanlike conduct, to put GWU on top by a 3-2 margin.
The Citadel reclaimed the lead following a decision at 174 pounds, but
Jha'Quan Anderson picked up a 6-3 decision over Kyle Kretzer in his first action of the season to again claim a 6-5 lead for the 'Dogs.
The Citadel took control of the dual in the following four matches, earning extra points in each to take a 28-6 lead.
Trevon Majette picked up his first dual match win of the season at 141 pounds, earning a 9-4 decision over Ethan Willis.
The Citadel wrapped up the dual by taking the 149-pound match by major decision.
Three extra matches took place between the visiting Bulldogs and GWU following the dual, with Gardner-Webb taking all three.
Joseph Mecham defeated Sebastian Collazo by an 18-7 major decision, Anderson defeated Cooper Youngblood by a 16-5 major decision, and
Brandon Bright pinned Tyler Seeley in 2:55.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C., taking on Appalachian State at 4:30 pm and Campbell at 6:00 pm.
