Cross Country Concludes Regular Season at Upstate Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb concluded its 2021 regular season on Saturday morning at the 2021 Upstate Invitational at Milliken Research Park. The women came in 13th place at the meet while the men finished in 12th.
Amy Prugh came across the line in 31st posting a 19:57. This marks her second meet in a row posting a sub-20-minute 5K. Hannah Mitchell finished next at 20:49. At 21:29, Camille Sykes crossed the line with a sub-seven-minute mile pace. Jennifer Escalera was the fourth GWU runner to finish at 21:53. Chloe McDaniel rounded out the Runnin' Bulldogs' top five with a 22:11, and Brooklyn Tretter close behind at 22:31.
On the men's side, Patrick Sastre was the first finisher for the 'Dogs with a new personal record at the course with a 28:19. Reigning Big South Runner of the Week Ryan Morita was right behind Sastre and finished the event at 28:28. Ethan Bentley was the next across the line for GWU in 31:36. In 32:39, Matthew Cloninger was the next finisher for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Garry Ankrom was the fifth-place finisher for Gardner-Webb in 35:19. Mark Mellon ended in the race in 36:28, and Cole Ray in 38:24.
Gardner-Webb has almost two weeks until their next meet, the Big South Conference Championship. The meet will be run in Kernersville, N.C. on October 29 with the men's to start at 2:00 p.m. and the women's at 3:00 p.m. with the award ceremony held at 4:00 p.m.
