GREENVILLE, S.C. – Men's Tennis finished the Furman Invite on Sunday afternoon with
John Spring and
Sebastian Harris going a perfect 3-0 each in their singles matches. This tournament hosted teams from Furman, Wofford, Presbyterian, and Gardner-Webb.
"We ended well with teams we will see later this year," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith. "I told the boys anyone who goes through the tournament undefeated will have done something based on this weekend's competition. This made Seb and John stand out this weekend."
Harris played the tournament's singles events from the #3 position, and Spring in the #6 flight. Harris defeated Wofford's player 6-4, 6-4 and Presbyterian's 6-0, 6-3 on Saturday to start the event. Also on Saturday, Harris lost a hard-fought doubles match to the top pair from Furman 7-6(2). Harris partnered with
Connor Enslin for this weekend's action. Despite that setback, Harris prevailed in his singles match against Furman 7-5, 7-6 on Sunday. In his doubles matches on Sunday, he and Enslin took down Presbyterian 6-3 but fell to Wofford by the same score. Enslin was in the #2 singles matches for the 'Dogs this weekend and came away with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Furman on Sunday.
For Spring, he won his Saturday singles matches over Wofford and Presbyterian also in straight sets. To keep his perfect record on the weekend in singles, Spring rallied from a loss in the first set to Furman. The final score for this match was 6-7, 6-1, [10-6]. Spring paired with
Numa Lemieux-Monette for doubles in the #3 position and went 2-1. This duo was the only pair to get a win against Furman on Saturday. Also, Spring and Lemieux-Monette collected a victory over Presbyterian by a 6-4 decision.
Victor Putter went 2-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles matches. His first win came against Presbyterian's Martens 6-4, 3-6, [10-3]. He followed this win with a 6-4, 4-6, [10-6} triumph over his opponent from Furman on Sunday. He partnered with
Chrisjan Van Wyk for doubles and had their win come against the #2 pair from Wofford on a 6-3 decision. Van Wyk played in the #1 flight for all singles matches during the weekend.
Gardner-Webb concludes their fall season at a UTR Tournament at Olde Providence Racquet Club from November 5-7. The location also has two former GWU tennis players working at the complex. The two are Evgeny Slesarev, a recent Gardner-Webb Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, and
Breno Plentz, a recent graduate who earned numerous All-Conference honors.
