Women’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Road Decision To Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. –  The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took a trip to the palmetto state on Wednesday afternoon, facing conference foe Charleston Southern, the 'Dogs dropped a 1-0 decision.

"Charleston Southern plays fast going forward and I thought we did a pretty good job defending after a slow start," said head coach Mike Varga. "They made it difficult to find any rhythm and they are a physical team. We created a couple decent chances and couldn't finish and allowed CSU to get out on a break late and they found the back of the net with a finish that was an incredible goal. We will regroup and get ready for a tough Hampton team at home on Saturday"

In a scoreless matchup that was down to the wire, Emma Ryan found the back of the net in the 85th minute, sealing the win for the Buccaneers.

CSU paced the matchup in shots with 18, GWU took 12 and had seven on goal. Klara Ovefelt led the Runnin' Bulldogs with four shots and a single shot on goal, teammate Alisha Holcombe recorded three shots with two on goal.

There were Sixteen corner kick opportunities throughout the match, which the Runnin' Bulldogs and Buccaneers split evenly.

Charleston Southern led the game with seven fouls, Gardner-Webb had just two less.

In goal for the Red and Black, Katelyn Kellogg logged five saves and just one goal against.

The 'Dogs will be back in action on Saturday, October 9th as they take on Hampton University. The match is slated to start at 7 pm on the home turf of Greene-Harbison Stadium.
