GWU Runners Set 15 New Collegiate Bests at Royals XC Challenge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb competed in the Royals XC Challenge at Queens University of Charlotte. The men's and women's teams each raced in the Gold Division heats of the meet. The women's team had all racers set new personal best or collegiate bests at the meet, while the men's team saw seven set. The women placed 23rd in their 5K while the men finished in 32nd.
Amy Prugh led the 'Dogs finishing in 84th in the field of over 300. Her time of 19:01 set was a new personal best. Hannah Mitchell came across the line next for Gardner-Webb in a new career-best time of 19:38. Breaking the 20-minute barrier at 19:59 was Taylor Robinson who ended in 161st. Teryn Bour set an improved on her college best with a time of 20:44, as well as Chloe McDaniel who had a 21:15. Also, Jennifer Escalera set her new PB with a 6:42 mile pace for a 20:50 time to round out the top-five finishers for the team. Camille Sykes had a new personal best too at 21:05. Brooklyn Tretter came across the line in 22:15 for a new career-best.
Ryan Morita set a personal best as he was the first across the line for Gardner-Webb in 26:34. Patrick Sastre was the next across for the 'Dogs in a personal best at 27:37. Ethan Bentley and Joe Waller finished back-to-back at 28:33 and 28:35, each new PBs. Also setting a new personal best was Matthew Cloninger at 29:48. Garry Ankrom dropped five minutes off his previous PB for a 32:01. The next finisher for the Runnin' Bulldogs was Mark Mellon with a 33:27, a three-minute improvement from his best time entering the meet. Cole Ray rounded out the 'Dogs finishers at crossing the finish at 39:01.
In addition to these performances, three of the runners put themselves in the top 20 in school history. Prugh's time put her at 10th in school history, and Mitchell's was good enough for 17th. On the mens side, Morita's run was the 12th best in Gardner-Webb history.
Gardner-Webb will run their next race on Saturday, October 16 at USC Upstate where the men will compete in an 8K and the women will in the 6K.
