BLACKSBURG, Va. – Gardner-Webb continued its challenging non-conference schedule on Saturday afternoon at No. 8 Virginia Tech, falling to the Hokies by a 35-6 score.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (1-1) captured wins in two matches, with
Todd Carter capturing an 8-6 sudden victory over Brandon Wittenberg at 133 pounds and 28th-ranked R.J. Mosley coming out on top with a 10-7 decision over Clayton Ulrey.
The Hokies (1-1), fresh off a tough loss to nationally-ranked Ohio State used its depth to win the remaining eight bouts. Five of Virginia Tech's wrestlers began the week ranked in the top 30 of their respective weight class nationally – and two are ranked in the top-10 individually.
Gardner-Webb nearly had three more wins, as
Trevon Majette (141),
Brandon Bright (149) and
Anthony Perrine (197) each fought hard in close defeats. Majette dropped a 1-0 decision to Collin Gerardi, while Bright fell 5-2 at 149 pounds. Perrine gave Dakota Howard a battle at 197 pounds before dropping a 10-7 decision.
The final margin was fueled by bonus points, as the Hokies (1-1) captured pins at 125 and 285 and tech falls at 174 and 184. The host squad also captured a major decision at 157.
Gardner-Webb continues its trek through the nation's best lineups, traveling to face nationally-ranked NC State on December 2 in Raleigh. The team's next home duel is set for December 11, as Big Ten foe Michigan State comes to Paul Porter Arena (ESPN+).
