Gardner-Webb Defeats Presbyterian, Davidson, in SoCon Action Saturday Afternoon

CLINTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up its fourth straight dual win Saturday afternoon, defeating both Presbyterian and Davidson in Southern Conference wrestling action inside Presbyterian's Templeton Center.

The day opened against Presbyterian, with the Blue Hose taking the first two matchups of the dual to take an early 6-0 lead over the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb quickly answered, with Trevon Majette defeating Jacob Brasseur by a 20-4 tech fall in 6:17 at 141 pounds and Brandon Bright picking up an 8-3 decision over Reid Stewart at 149 pounds to give GWU a 7-6 lead.

The 'Dogs controlled the remainder of the first dual of the afternoon. Taylor Parks defeated Zachary Phillips at the 157-pount weight class by a 9-2 decision, followed by a 16-0 tech fall win in just 3:33 by RJ Mosley at the 165-pound weight class over Bryton Goering.

Evan Shenk, competing at 174 pounds for the first time this season, made quick work of Victor Tello, pinning his shoulders to the mat in 2:26.

GWU earned wins by forfeit at 184 and 197 pounds respectively before wrapping up the first dual with Anthony Perrine picking up a 14-3 major decision over Airin Spell at the heavyweight division.

A pair of extra matches took place following the dual, with Anthony Schiess and Gabriel Pickett each being victorious.

Against Davidson, Gardner-Webb took an immediate 6-0 lead by claiming the 125-pound matchup by forfeit, but the Wildcats would cut that margin in half by taking the bout at 133 pounds.

GWU got back on track at 141 pounds, with Majette earning a 9-3 decision over Gavin Damasco, followed by a 13-5 major decision win for Brandon Bright over David Loniewski at 149 pounds to hold a 13-3 lead.

Davidson took the matchup at 157 pounds, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs responded by taking the remaining five bouts of the dual. Mosley defeated Anthony Spera by a 7-1 decision at 165 pounds, Shenk defeated Jaden Hardrick by a 6-3 decision at 174 pounds, Jha'Quan Anderson earned a 17-4 major decision over Gavin Henry at 184 pounds, and Samuel Mora pinned Finaly Holson in 5:20 in his first match of the season at 197 pounds. The dual concluded with Perrine earning a 4-3 decision over Mitchell Trigg at the heavyweight class.

Four extra matches took place following the dual, in which Joseph Mecham earned a win.

Next on the schedule for the Runnin' Bulldogs is the 2021 SoCon Wrestling Championships, set for Sunday, February 28 in Boone, N.C.
