ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb competed in the UNC Asheville Invitational this past weekend with eight different Runnin' Bulldogs winning a match at the two-day event. The tournament hosted teams from UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, and Presbyterian.
On the first day of the event, the Runnin' Bulldogs played in a total of 22 matches, 16 singles and six doubles, compiling ten victories across all matches.
On the first day of the event, Gardner-Webb's
Sebastian Harris went 2-0 in singles, winning matches over Presbyterian's Sebastian Dominguez and Nicholas McKinney.
Victor Putter also went 2-0 on the day, defeating Daniel Stenger and Max Benson of Presbyterian.
Chrisjan Van Wyk won a singles match 6-3, 6-2 over Presbyterian's Alberto Conde. Samuel Jones defeated Vance Mercer 6-3, 6-3 and
John Spring beat Daniel Martens 6-3, 6-2 to help Gardner-Webb compile seven total singles victories on the opening day of the event.
Alex Griffiths won both doubles matches he played in, the first paired with
Breno Plentz and the second with Putter. Both matches had 6-3 decisions.
On the second day of the event, Van Wyk defeated Asheville's Sirawit Daosaengsawang 6-3, 4-6, (10-8) for Gardner-Webb's lone singles victory of the day.
Plentz and Griffiths picked up another victory in doubles on Sunday to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the season when paired together. Jones and
Stefano Puga also won their doubles match on Sunday with a 6-4 decision.
Next up for the Runnin' Bulldogs a home match on February 10th at 2 p.m. as the team seeks their first victory of the season. Fans will be allowed to attend the event, but are asked to follow the COVID guidelines set by the school.
