BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – On Saturday afternoon Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs Softball split the day's games. Taking down the Toledo Rockets with a final score 9-3, Gardner-Webb. While losing the following game to the Saint Francis Red Flash with a final score of 13-0.
Game One Recap (9-3, Gardner-Webb):
Head Coach Tom Cole and his softball squad finally managed to get their first win of the season over the Toledo Rockets.
Gardner-Webb took an early advantage in the first inning by loading the bases. With Jenna Wacaster Andrea Lyon, and Tristen Horrell each on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd; Molly Montgomery was able to reach first off of an error by Toledo's second baseman, allowing the 'Dogs to come home with a 3-0 advantage.
In the second inning, the Runnin' Bulldog's furthered their lead, as Horrell hit a home run, allowing Weslyn Almond and Leslie McNeil to cross home plate. Andrea Lyon then smacked another homer to take herself home. Later in the second, Wacaster crossed home plate again off of a double from Molly Montgomery. Making it 8-0, Gardner-Webb.
Then in the third inning, Katie Mitchell scored by a double from Almond to make in 9-0.
The Rockets from Toledo were able to put up three runs on the board during their at-bat in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to catch the Runnin' Bulldogs lead that was held for the remainder of the game.
Game Two Recap (13-0, Saint Francis):
Pitching for Saint Francis, Grace Vesco earned the win over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Vesco only allowed one hit the game. The lone hit in the game came from a single by Almond, who was that leadoff batter for GWU.
There was one walk in the game for Gardner-Webb, which was given to catcher Montgomery in the second inning.
Myers, Lyon, and Horrell each saw action on the mound against the Red Flash. The trio of pitchers each allowed four hits, accounting for 12 total. Myers allowed six runs, Lyon allowed five runs, and Horrell allowed two.
Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action tomorrow, March 14th, as the Runnin' Bulldog's take on Saint Francis at 12:00 PM, and Toledo at 2:00 PM.
