March 17, 2021 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb swept the Big South Conference's weekly accolades on Wednesday. Victor Putter was named the Player of the Week, and Chrisjan Van Wyk won the Freshman of the Week. This is the second time Van Wyk has been named the Big South Freshman of the Week.
After the conference's announcement, Head Coach Mike Griffith said, "I'm so happy for both Victor and Chrisjan." "The future is going to be fun with these two."
Putter assisted in securing three conference match victories the past week for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Putter posted a 3-0 record in doubles, all from the #1 position. He defeated Campbell's duo 6-2, Longwood 6-3, and Presbyterian 7-6(1). In singles action, all matches played were in the #1 flight where he posted a 2-1 record. On Monday, he won against Campbell 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and followed it with the match-clinching victory on Thursday against Longwood 6-3, 7-5.
"Victor's work ethic is so good; he deserves this award because of his drive and determination," said Griffith. "He has improved so much and now can play with anyone he faces. This past week versus Campbell, Victor hit a shot that only a #1 guy can hit. First time I have been amazed at what he can do on the courts, and he is only a sophomore."
Van Wyk helped lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to three conference wins last week by posting a 5-1 overall record. Van Wyk went undefeated in doubles action, going 3-0 in all appearances from the #1 flight. On Monday, he defeated Campbell 6-2, Longwood was beaten 6-3. The week's doubles action ended with a 7-6(1) victory at Presbyterian. In singles, he played all matches at #2, winning against Campbell 6-1, 6-4, and Presbyterian 6-2, 6-4.
"He has tools that cannot be taught, great hands at the net, and is super quick for his size," said Griffith. "He has a great future ahead of him, and it's going to be fun the rest of the season."
This week the Runnin' Bulldogs play host for three non-conference matches. UNC Greensboro will play on Wednesday, followed by Limestone on Friday. On Sunday, Gardner-Webb will face Davidson.
