Late Thursday Charge Lifts Gardner-Webb Women Into Fourth-Place Tie
April 15, 2021 | Women's Golf
NINETY SIX, S.C. – Allison Chandler and Linnea Hofgren rallied with four combined birdies over the final four holes Thursday to pull Gardner-Webb back into a tie for fourth place after the second round of the 2021 Big South Women's Golf Championship.
The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow at the Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor. The top four teams following stroke play will advance to a match play segment on Saturday.
A high-scoring day for most of the participating teams saw first-place Campbell's lead challenged, but saw the Fighting Camels remain in front. High Point and Winthrop made the biggest moves, with both catching the lead trio of Campbell, USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb by the end of the day.
USC Upstate remained in second, with High Point third and Gardner-Webb tied with Winthrop in fourth. Longwood is 11 strokes behind that duo in sixth place.
Gardner-Webb was 13 strokes off its Wednesday pace overall, but Chandler – a veteran playing in her fifth Big South Championship – was able to keep her team from fading too far. Chandler carded a 72 on the day, which included clutch birdies on the 15th and 18th holes. She also had a birdie on the fifth and sank an eagle put on the sixth hole.
Her strong finish allowed Chandler to push her way into a tie for 14th individually.
Hofgren started Thursday in the lead threesome with Anna Nordfors (Campbell) and Beem Pabsimma (USC Upstate). She finished the front nine at two over (38) and shot even par over the first four holes on her back nine. She gathered herself after a triple bogey on hole 14, rebounding with a birdie on the next hole and closing out her round with another birdie to move back into fifth individually.
Lindsay Koppel (78) and Dominika Burdova (80) played well enough to remain in the top-25 individually, with Koppel sitting in a tie for 20th and Burdova in 25th. Gillian O'Brien sank three birdie putts on Thursday to finish in 35th.
Pabsimma leads the field individually heading into Friday's final round, with five other golfers within seven strokes of that lead – including Hofgren.
Gardner-Webb and Winthrop are just two strokes out of third and seven strokes out of second. Campbell holds a 15-stroke lead over the field with 18 holes remaining.
The first groups Friday will tee off at 8:00 am.
