April 17, 2021 | Women's Golf
NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb advanced to Saturday's Big South Women's Golf Match Play Championship round before falling to top-seeded Campbell, 3-1-1, to finish second.
The second-place effort matched Gardner-Webb's best at the event. The 2021 tournament was the first to feature a Match Play format for the final round. Head Coach Tee Burton's squad knocked off second-seeded USC Upstate in the semifinals by a 3-1-1 score.
In those semifinals, Allison Chandler upset individual Big South Champion Beem Pabsimma 2&1, picking up momentum midway through the back nine. Chandler's efforts were key, as she joined Dominika Burdova (3&2) and Linnea Hofgren (5&4) with individual wins to power the overall victory.
Upstate took a 4&3 win in its lone successful matchup. Gardner-Webb's Lindsay Koppel battled to a tie in her match.
In the finals Gardner-Webb held leads in all but one match midway through the round, but the Camels were able to fight back to take wins in three of the skirmishes.
Hofgren (1&2) defeated Hawkins for the Runnin' Bulldogs lone win and Gillian O'Brien managed a tie for GWU.
The 2021 Tournament was played at The Patriot at Grand Harbor, a sun-splashed, 6,165-yard course (Par 72) that has become a regular home to the Big South women's – and men's – championship.
