HOW IT HAPPENED

During Winthrop's at bat in the bottom the 5th inning, Perry walked McCall who then stole second, who then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly. McCall then took advantage and scored on a passed ball that was dropped by catcher Ashlee Baker. McCall's run became the lone and eventual game winning run for the Eagles.

In the sixth inning the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to find the momentum that they needed to equalize the matchup, as Katie Mitchell grounded out to the catcher, Leslie McNeil grounded out to third base, and Weslyn Almond fouled out to left field all in order for the final out of the inning.

In an effort to turn things around during Gardner-Webb's at bat in the top of the seventh inning, Lyon immediately grounded out to Winthrop's pitcher Madyson Watson for the first out. Perry was walked to first base, then was tagged out at second which allowed Tristen Horrell to reach on a fielders choice, who then advanced to second on a tight single down the left field line from Meredith Ferguson. With the two runners on base with just as many outs, Reah Barger struck out swinging for the final out of the game, forcing Gardner-Webb to take the loss.

Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action tomorrow in Cullowhee, N.C. as the Runnin' Bulldogs take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in doubleheader action. The first game is slated to start at 4:00 PM, and both games will stream on ESPN+.
