SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb Softball dropped both ends of their doubleheader against USC Upstate on Monday Afternoon, today marks the conclusion of the 2021 season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

• Brooke Perry led the Runnin' Bulldogs at the plate by going 4-for-5 with one homerun and three RBI on the day.
• Weslyn Almond went 3-for-7 at the plate with one double.
• Abbey Goodrum went 2-for-6 with one homerun and accounted for three RBI's.

 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Game One: USC Upstate 7, Gardner-Webb 4
 
By the end of the fourth inning, USC Upstate led by seven total runs. During the top of the fifth, Gardner-Webb began to get the momentum going as Meredith Ferguson singled, which was followed another single from Jenna Wacaster. With two runners on first and second, Abbey Goodrum homered over the left field fence, which closed the gap on the Spartan's lead. 
 
Up at the plate next, Katie Mitchell reached on a fielder's choice, Leslie McNeil reached on a fielder's choice as Mitchell was tagged out at second base for the first out of the inning. Weslyn Almond singled through the left side, who was then tagged for the second out while Laken Myers reached on a fielder's choice. With runners on first and third, Brooke Perry hit an RBI single to right field, sending McNeil home to make it a 4-7 game.
 
The Spartan's made a pitching change in the sixth, putting Savannah Brown in the circle, who retired Ferguson, Jenna Wacaster, and Goodrum in order. During Gardner-Webb's at bat in the seventh, Almond slapped a double to left field with two outs on the board, but then Andrea Lyon grounded out for the final out of game one.
 
Game Two: USC Upstate 6, Gardner-Webb 2
 
Gardner-Webb's two run's of the second game came in the sixth inning. Tristen Horrell grounded out for the first out, Trinity Sterrett then singled down their third base line, which was followed by Almond who fouled out to left field. With two outs on the board, Brooke Perry smacked a 2 RBI homerun over center field to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Lyon then popped up for the third out of Gardner-Webb's at bat. 
 
USC Upstate then scored three runs in the bottom of the six to take home the eventual win over Gardner-Webb.
