BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville defeated Gardner-Webb on its Senior Day 5-2, en route to the visitors clinching the 2021 Big South Men's Tennis Regular Season Championship.
"We needed to win the doubles point to get momentum heading into singles, but Asheville played well and secured the point," said Head Coach Mike Griffith. "They had a lot of talent and had to earn the win today."
Gardner-Webb opened the doubles matches with a 6-3 win on court #1 by
Chrisjan Van Wyk and
Victor Putter. The win puts the duo at 10-0 when paired together this season. UNC Asheville came back to win the doubles point with victories on courts 2 and 3. The #3 flight saw
Sebastian Harris and
John Spring fall 3-6. The opponents clinched the point after Oli Nolan and Bruno Serra defeated
Stefano Puga and
Breno Plentz 6-4 in the #2 position.
UNC Asheville swept the first three singles matches, providing the team with the win and clinch of the Big South Regular Season Title. In the #6 position, Spring fell 1-6, 3-6.
Connor Enslin's match at #5 wrapped up shortly after with a 3-6, 1-6 defeat. The visitors clinched the victory with Nolan's win in the topflight 6-0, 6-3 over Putter. The Bulldogs' Jon Brann Reid overcame his first set loss to Plentz to win the #3 match 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' Van Wyk and Harris had strong performances in their matches, providing the team with their two points of the day. Van Wyk rallied from a first-set loss in the #2 position, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. Harris also conquered a 4-6 first set knock-back to win his match at #4, 4-6, 7-6(4), 10-1.
This match marked the end of the conference regular season for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, April 9 which is the last home match of the season against S.C. State. The final match before postseason play is a road trip to UNC Wilmington on Sunday, April 1.
