BURLINGTON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb women's golf took third place at the 2021 Elon Fall Invitational Tuesday, finishing just four strokes out of first place.
The Runnin' Bulldogs led the field after Monday's first two rounds, firing a 294 to open and lowering that number to 291 after the second round.
Gardner-Webb shot an even 300 on Tuesday, and team champion William & Mary came through with its lowest team round of the event, carding a 292 to pull ahead of host Elon (884) and the Runnin' Bulldogs (885).
That trio finished well ahead of the remaining field, with Appalachian State (912) coming in fourth and North Carolina A&T finishing fifth (931). Presbyterian (967), North Carolina Central (1,040) and Maryland Eastern Shore (1,166) rounded out the field.
The tournament was played at the Alamance Country Club.
Veteran
Linnea Hofgren shined throughout the 54-hole event, finishing second individually. She shot a 70 to open play on Monday and finished that day with a 74. She rallied Tuesday with a 71, finishing just four shot off the lead.
Dominika Burdova (72-72-74) finished fourth and
Kayla Dowdell (77-69-75) finished seventh to lead the 'Dogs.
Gillian O'Brien (75-78-80) tied for 22nd individually and
Ellis Harvie rounded out the Gardner-Webb participants in 33rd (87-76-84).
The GWU women will get back into action on October 4, playing in the Radford Fall Shootout in Blacksburg, Va.
