MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team earned their second consecutive win this season on the road Sunday afternoon against Alabama State University. As the Runnin' Bulldogs pulled a 1-0 shutout over the Hornets.
"We will definitely take two shutout wins over the weekend," said head coach
Mike Varga "It wasn't a flawless match today by any means but we scored on an incredible free kick by Marina and were able to keep Alabama state at bay. Winning is hard and we found a way this weekend, I'm proud of our effort and our ability not to concede."
Marina Bradic secured the win for the Red and Black by scoring the lone goal of the match in the 53
rd minute. Bradic's lone goal of the day became the eventual game winner for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Alabama State led the matchup in shots with a total of 20, Gardner-Webb had eight. Starters Ximena Farias,
Livi Tanzer, and
Marina Bradic each took a pair of shots. Coming off the bench,
Abby Clark had two shots as well.
Throughout the course of the match only five corner kicks were taken. The Hornets were given three opportunities, and the Runnin' Bulldogs were given two.
The Hornets also patched the 'Dogs in fouls, having a 6 total, Gardner-Webb had one less.
Earning the Shutout win for GWU, goalkeeper
Katelyn Kellogg logged another full match in-between the posts. Throughout the match Kellogg recorded five saves, and zero goals against.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday, September 9
th, as they travel to take on Elon. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m.
