LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Gardner-Webb wrestling rallied with three wins over the final three weight classes Sunday afternoon to beat Bellarmine (Ky.) by a 24-15 score in Southern Conference action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-4, 1-0 SoCon) won their conference opener in their first meeting with the Knights.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 11-3 lead after a tech fall win by
Todd Carter at 133 pounds and a pin by
Trevon Majette at 141 pounds. Bellarmine mounted a counter attack, rattling off four consecutive wins to seize a 15-11 edge after seven bouts.
All four Knights' victories came by decision and Gardner-Webb ramped up its efforts at 184 pounds to stem the run.
Jha'Quan Anderson dominated reigning SoCon Wrestler of the Week Sam Schroeder, taking a 15-1 major decision to knot the team score with two weight classes still to wrestle.
Veteran
Anthony Perrine came through with a clutch 9-2 decision over Bryant Wilkinson at 197 pounds, giving the 'Dogs an 18-15 lead.
Freshman
Peyton McComas came through with a big performance, pinning Charlie Cadell late (6:37) in the third period to clinch the team win by a final 24-15 margin.
Four of Gardner-Webb five wins on Sunday scored bonus points. All five of Bellarmine's wins resulted in just three team points.
Head coach
Daniel Elliott's squad will get back on the mats next Tuesday, January 25, at Appalachian State. That dual is set to begin at 7:00 pm in Boone, N.C.
