Game-Winner Refuses To Fall For Gardner-Webb In 64-62 Loss To Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – A game-winning 3-point attempt from D'Maurian Williams failed to fall at the buzzer as Gardner-Webb (9-10, 3-3) dropped a tight Big South North Division showdown to Winthrop (12-6, 5-0) on Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, 64-62.

The Runnin' Bulldogs led for nearly 31 minutes against the Big South's preseason favorite, stretching an advantage to as many as 10 points midway into the second half before Winthrop gained its second lead of the game with 3:25 to play and closed on a 22-13 run over the final 6:22 to escape with the win and remain undefeated in league play this season.

Trailing by five with seven seconds remaining, Lance Terry buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it a two-point game, 64-62. After Gardner-Webb fouled following the inbounds, Winthrop's Patrick Good missed the front end of a one-one-one as Williams snatched the rebound and took off down the floor with six seconds still on the clock.

Looking for one last opportunity, Williams powered past half court and created space on the right side to rise and hoist a 3 to win it, but his buzzer-beating attempt hit off the back rim and bounced out as the Eagles celebrated a come-from-behind effort to cap off their 11th-straight home win inside of Winthrop Coliseum.

Terry finished with a season-high 20 points behind four 3-pointers and a 7-of-12 shooting performance overall. It marks the third time in his career scoring 20 points or more.

Zion Williams also finished in double figures for GWU with 11 points and six rebounds, while Jordan Sears tallied nine points and D'Maurian Williams added eight to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Anthony Selden also gathered a team and a career-high eight boards on the day, one more than Ludovic Dufeal, who finished with seven rebounds and two assists.

Gardner-Webb shot 40.0% overall on 22-of-55 shooting from the field and an 8-for-21 mark from beyond the arc. Winthrop, who hit just six field goals in the first half, ended the game shooting 22-of-45 (48.9%) overall. The Eagles connected on only four 3-pointers, tied for the third fewest against the Runnin' Bulldogs this season.

The win for Winthrop improves the Eagles to 6-1 in games decided by five points or less this season, while the 'Dogs move to 1-3 in such contests. WU has now won six in a row overall, while GWU has dropped its last three following a 3-0 start to the conference slate.

Gardner-Webb will now look ahead to its upcoming game on Thursday, January 27 at UNC Asheville. A second consecutive road test and their third in the last four games, the Runnin' Bulldogs will look to get back on track against an Asheville team also sporting a 3-3 record in Big South play this season. Tipoff is pinned for 7 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPNU.
