BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Radford defeated Gardner-Webb 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in a key Big South match. Both teams entered the afternoon in a three-way tie for third in the conference with 13 points each.
The Highlanders got out to an early lead in the 5
th minute as Kat Parris tallied her first point of the day off an assist from Lilly Short. Radford scored their second as Parris sent a pass to Katelyn O'Donnell who knocked it into the woodwork.
In the second half, Gardner-Webb continued to create chances, but were unable to get any of their 15 shots past RU's Jordan Phillips. Radford registered their third goal of the day on their 12
th corner kick of the match. Neither team would go on to score again.
GWU's goalkeeper
Chloe Leffler faced 16 shots and made three saves during the game.
Maddie Turlington finished the match with eight shots, putting three on goal.
"It was a disappointing result tonight. Radford was able to capitalize on a mistake early, and you just can't make mistakes against quality teams," said head coach
Mike Varga. "We created some chances and we had some opportunities. I felt if we could have gotten it to 2-1 in the second half then we could have gotten some momentum and who knows what could have happened, but we just couldn't find the back of the net."
The Runnin' Bulldogs last regular season game will be played on Wednesday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. hosting USC Upstate for Senior Night. The match will be crucial as GWU continues to fight for a top-four spot in the standings as they look to qualify for the conference tournament.
