BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The first day of the Big South Fall Individual Tournament concluded with Eduardo Dias and Numa Lemieux-Monette going a perfect 3-0 in all their matches. Two doubles pairs advanced to the semifinals of the event, and three Gardner-Webb players advanced to the Round of 16 in singles as well.
The first two rounds of the doubles bracket were completed during the morning session of the day. Gardner-Webb's Lemieux-Monette and
Victor Putter defeated the #1 seed from Campbell in the opening round 6-4 and backed up that performance with a 7-5 triumph over UNC Asheville. The other duo from GWU remaining is Dias and
Chrisjan Van Wyk. The 'Dogs knocked off the #3 seed out of Presbyterian 7-5 and tore through Campbell 6-2 to advance to the semis.
The two Gardner-Webb pairs face each other in the first semifinal on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. The other matchup pits two teams from Radford against each other. The doubles championship will be played on Sunday morning. Also,
John Spring and Kim Neithammar won their opening match 6-4.
In singles, Spring advanced after his opponent retired due to an injury. Dias entered the bracket slotted at #5 and won 6-4, 6-0 against Timeo Peuch of Longwood while Lemieux-Monette defeated the Lancers' Luis Reis 6-2, 6-3. In the B draw,
Cathal Butler advanced due to an opponent's retirement as well.
The Day Two schedule starts with all doubles matches kicking off at 9:00 a.m. This includes the semifinals, consolation, and B draw events. Following that, the main draw of singles will begin their second round at 10:00 a.m. with consolation and B draw matches continuing throughout the morning. The following round of singles will continue at 1:00 p.m. with competition continuing all afternoon.
