ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off two wins last weekend, Gardner-Webb hit the road on Friday night, falling to Winthrop, 3-0, in Big South action from Winthrop Coliseum.
The Eagles (7-9, 3-2 Big South) took sets by final scores of 25-12, 25-23 and 26-15 to take the victory. The loss is just the third for the Runnin' Bulldogs in league play this season as they move to 4-13 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
After a slow start in the opening game, Gardner-Webb surged to a 15-9 lead with a commanding 8-1 run in set two. Winthrop methodically battled back, however, trimming its deficit to two at 21-19 before using a 6-2 run of its own to claim a two-point victory. Now leading 2-0, the Eagles went on to earn the straight-set win with another strong performance in the third and final frame.
Kylee Garrison led Gardner-Webb with seven kills and 12 digs.
Mikayla Logan added five kills and three blocks, while
Avery Cole also recorded five kills and a block.
Delaney McCullough posted four kills and tied Logan for a team-high three blocks, with
Makena Phillips and
McKenna Timmerman also registering kills with two and one apiece, respectively.
Morgan Hornaday once again led the team with 20 assists to go along with seven digs and two blocks, while fellow freshman
Sophia Kotsovolos registered a team-leading 15 digs. Hornaday also had two service aces to lead the way, followed by one apiece from Kotsovolos and
Sophia Bolden.
The Runnin' Bulldogs hit .019 as a team with a .229 kill percentage. Overall, GWU posted 24 kiolls, four service aces, six blocks, 21 assists and 42 digs.
Gardmer-Webb will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, October 8 when it travels to Clinton, S.C. to face off against Presbyterian. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. and can be followed with live stats.
