Men's Tennis Add Players to Join GWU Beginning in Spring and Fall 2023

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb added a pair of players on Tuesday afternoon with the signings of Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) and Johannes Van Wijk (Somerset West, South Africa).

Terblanche will join GWU in the fall of 2023 and hails from the same hometown and school (Scotch College) as current Runnin' Bulldog Connor Enslin. While in school, he served as the team captain. In the Pizzey Cup, he helped lead Western Australia to the title, marking the first time the Western side has won it in 25 years. Terblance also reached the quarterfinals of the tournament which brings the best players from Australia to it.

Head Coach Mike Griffith said this on Terblanche, "One of the most competitive tennis players ever. He has quickness, a world-class backhand, and the drive to be the best."

This upcoming January, Van Wijk will be added to the team for the upcoming spring season. He will be graduating from Paul Roos Gymnasium this December. Of the U18s in South Africa, he ranks in the Top 10 behind winning over 70% of all matches he has played in.

"He will thrive here with his all-court game and work ethic," said Griffith. "He has great character and is a team guy. He will fit in well with our team and be an important part of our goals this upcoming season."

Gardner-Webb now continues to prepare for their matches in the spring with the season beginning in January. The team has high hopes for 2023 as Griffith said "We have everything to win the conference with our doubles players, senior leadership, depth, and top players."
